Coffs Harbour (pop. 22,734) is one of the major north coast resort towns. Established in the late 1800s it is a booming destinations for holiday makers and retirees alike. The North Coast Regional Botanic Garden and the Clog Barn (a miniature Dutch village) are some of the major tourist attractions.
Built in 1964 and 11m long, the Big Banana is the original Australian "big" thing. Part of a very extensive tourist complex, a visit here is one of the boxes that MUST be ticked on any east coast Old Highway One exploration! It's west of the highway on the north side of town. Also look out for the Giant Bunch of Bananas adorning Cunningham's Bananas (a roadside fruit stall on the east side of the highway just north of the big Stadium Dr roundabout) and the Big Windwill, an unmissable part of The Windmill Motor Lodge motel and restaurant complex which has been welcoming travellers to Coffs Harbour since 1982. Look out for it just west of the highway on the south side of town.
The Open Arms Festival takes place in November, the Bellingen Jazz & Blues Festival in August and the Buskers & Comedy Festival in late September. Just north of the Big Banana, follow Bruxner Park Rd a few kilometres north-west into the Orara State Forest to Bruxner Park Flora Reserve with rainforest walks, a picnic area and a scenic lookout.
